<Trick or Treat!! / はじめに>
Hello, everyone!! It’s November!! We have only two months left in 2023. Time flies so fast.
At the end of October, on 28th, we held a special meeting!! Pumpkin decoration, costumes… yes!! Halloween!! We had a wonderful time together.
こんにちは！11月になりました。今年も残すところあと２か月。穏やかな日差しと爽やかな風が心地よい晩秋です。
先日の例会は10月の末。カボチャの置物や衣装、被り物で変身！いつもの例会がハロウィンイベントに！笑顔いっぱいの楽しい一日になりました。
＜TMOD/ 司会挨拶＞
The host of the meeting was ™.IM, our sweet and caring mother. She set the meeting theme, “The tastes of Autumn”.
The Halloween treats/ snacks on the table were gifts from her!! Who would get them!? Nobody knew but her!! Let’s enjoy the meeting!!
今回の総合司会はIMさん。優しくかわいいみんなにとって自慢のクラブの母です。
例会会場入口にはカラフルなペーパーナプキンとお菓子が詰まったかぼちゃの入れ物。
「わあ！ハロウィンだ！」ワクワクな気分が盛り上がります。
さらに演台の横には、お店のような素敵なディスプレイ。ラッピングされた袋のお菓子がたくさん！夢の国に来た子どものように、到着するメンバーたちの笑顔がこぼれます。
全てはIMさんからのサプライズ！今日はどんな例会になるんだろう！猫の耳とハロウィンカラーのネッカチーフをつけたIMさんが登壇して例会は始まりました。
「今回のテーマは『秋の味覚』。柿、さんま、秋は美味しい食べ物がいっぱい！みんなが好きな秋の味を聞かせて！」とほほ笑みます。
「最後にこのお菓子をプレゼントします。誰がもらえるかはお楽しみ！」とのこと。
我々の目はお菓子にくぎ付け。ゲットできるように頑張らなくっちゃ！

The following was fun and my favorite.
The teammates of Shohei Otani are very quick to leave after the games. They are in a hurry to go back home. Because they are good at hitting a “home run”.

今日のオープニングセッションを担当したのは、MZさん。
言葉と雰囲気に優しさがにじみでるジェントルマンが、今回挑戦したのはなんと「英語 de オヤジギャグ！」スポーツの秋に絡めて、ラグビーや野球をネタにオヤジギャグを丁寧に、どんどん披露していきます。言語の壁と笑いのツボの違いを超えられるか・・・!?
大谷翔平と栗山監督のネタから「選手たちは帰りの支度のスピードがものすごく早い。びっくりするくらいワーッと帰る。なんたって彼らは『ホームラン（Home＝家に、Run＝走る）』連発のツワモノたちだから！」
おおー！なるほど。。うむうむ。間違いない。
・・・しかし、英語のユーモアを楽しむためには、理解・感心・納得よりも、ワハハと笑いの瞬発力を共有できるように聴衆も精進せねばネ、と思うのでした。
＜Table Topics Session / 即興スピーチ＞
At the Table Topics Session, we develop our impromptu speech skills.
Table Topics Master was ™. MK. We enjoyed his good questions related to “festivals and events” and the unique answers.
＜Questions & Answers＞
Q1: What is the best food at festivals or events you have ever tasted?
A: Durian fruit at an Asian food festival.
Q2 : What is your favorite food for Halloween?
A: …. I enjoyed German beer at the Oktoberfest at Red Brick warehouse.
Q3 : What was the last event you attended?
A: Family gathering. I’m looking forward to talking with them at the end of this year.
Q4 : What event are you looking for now?
A: X’mas with my future girlfriend. I’m looking for her with a matching App.

Q5 : What is the most important thing when you/we host a party?
A: Food!! It should be delicious and nice looking. It creates a good party atmosphere.
【テーブルトピックス】のセッションでは、その場でお題が与えられて、１分〜２分で即興スピーチを披露します。短い時間で考えをまとめて人前で話す、即興力と度胸が鍛えられます。
司会はMKさん。このセッションリーダーは初挑戦。「イベントやお祭り」を切り口に質問を投げかけ、楽しいトークを引き出しました。
＜質問と回答＞
①「イベントやお祭りで食べた、最高に美味しかった食べものは？」
→「アジア料理のイベントで食べたドリアン！臭いけれど、クリーミーで濃厚で最高に美味しかった！」
②「ハロウィンでの思い出の料理ってありますか？」
→「私が子どもだった時、いかんせんハロウィンなんてものはなかった。。。でも、秋のイベントと言えば、赤レンガ倉庫のオクトーバーフェスト（ドイツビールの祭典）はよかった！」（会場一同、同意でうなづく）
③「直近最後に参加したこれぞという行事とは？」
→「家族行事の一つとして、毎年末家族で集まること！どんな一年を過ごしたのかを両親姉妹たちと話す時間を大切にしている。今回進学報告できるのが楽しみ！」
④「楽しみにしているイベントはありますか？」
→「これから出会う予定の恋人と過ごすクリスマス！大さん橋の夜景を一緒に見て、それより綺麗な彼女（仮）の美しさを讃えるつもりです」（ランデブー実現しますように！）
⑤「パーティを企画する際、重要なこと/ 要素ってなんでしょう？」
→「雰囲気のよい素敵な会場、会費は大事。でも一番重要なのはやっぱり料理！美味しくて見た目も良くて楽しめるものが最高です！」
また一つ、みんなの素顔を知りました。
<Prepared Speech Session/ 準備スピーチ>
① RSさん「My 7-year Journeyー私の日本滞在記」
“Xin Chào!” ™.RS smiled and greeted the members in Vietnamese.
She is from Vietnam and came to Japan 7 years ago as an exchange student.
She stayed in Hokkaido for one and a half years and now works and lives in Yokohama.
She shared her principles to live her life along with her own experiences, mistakes and learning.
Never forget the original heart/spirit
The courage to admit what I/we don’t know and
The power of networking
The speech was full of energy and her passionate and sincere personality.
We’re your supporters and looking forward to knowing more about you!!
「シンチャオ！（=Xin Chào ベトナム語でこんにちは！）」
はじける笑顔の新メンバーRSさんは今回初スピーチ。
７年前奨学生として来日。１年半北海道旭川で過ごしたのち、今横浜在住。足かけ7年。
居酒屋でのアルバイトでビールを大量にひっくり返して怒られたり、就職面接で失言をするなど、様々な失敗をしながらもへこたれずひとつひとつ学びの糧としてきました。日本での生活や仕事を頑張っています。
初心を忘れないこと、わからないことは受け流さずきちんと聞いて話して確認して進めること、人とのつながりを大切にすること。この３つを大事にしています。
その前向きさとひたむきさを感じる熱意ある話し方に、クラブが彼女のサポーターになるような空気に包まれました。
② OTさん ｢A reedーわたしは考える葦でありたい」
Calculation exercises 50 questions per day, vocabulary building 10 words per day…He has worked on those things using his smartphone apps for up to 400 days!!
He has just started new things too, recording diet and writing a wish/ to do list everyday.
He is trying to incorporate what he is not good at into his daily life.
He believes those efforts make a difference and lead him to a better version of him.
When he thinks, acts and keeps doing it, he can believe in himself.
He said he would like to be a “thinking reed”, as French philosopher Pascal said.
Living with one’s own ideas and will. It will give him/her confidence and satisfaction.
計算問題や単語の勉強。スマホアプリも駆使して続けること４００日。
苦手をあえて毎日のルーティンに取り入れることで、ちょっと変わる自分。
食べたものの記録をして栄養やカロリーにも意識が向くようになってきた。
やらねば→やろうと思うことは書きだして「見える化」して確実に実行！
嫌なことは逃避しがちだったのに。今の自分がちょっと好き。
自分らしく生きる。自分の意思を持って生きる。『考える葦』としての生き方をしたい。
なにげない毎日の中で自分と向き合うということ。内なる声を拾い行動する姿を見ました。
③ FNさん ｢Neither from here nor from thereー自分が生き、立つところ」
For the last a couple of months ™. FN went back to his home country, Mexico. Revisiting his own roots gave him a chance to look back on his life and think about the community and society where he had grown up.
He was a shy little boy, who couldn't dance with a girl at the wedding party. As he became older, he noticed the social/ family pressure on how to live in a conservative and religious society, following certain patterns of life, graduating from a good school, having a notable career, getting married, having children and leading a wealthy life.
On the other hand, society is not so clean and simple. There are social stereotypes, racist attitudes especially based on the skin colors, and are taboo topics even in families.
There is no perfect place on earth. The point is how to live with embracing imperfection and find one’s own place and values. Those are not given. People keep looking for it in their own life.
母国メキシコを出て10年。今年３か月、まとまった期間帰省して振り返った自分の半生。
幼少期はシャイだった。保守的で信仰心にあつく、人種や肌の色に敏感なコミュニティで育った。社会や家族からの「人生こうあるべき論」に圧力や息苦しさはあった。そうした理想と現実に乖離はあり、身近なところでもタブーを見て見ぬふりをすることだってあった。
「完璧な場所」というものは存在しない。万人にとっても、自分にとっても。世界を移動しながら生きてきた。なにかしらの欠落やひずみは受け入れたうえで、自分にとっての「居場所」を見つけ求めつづけるなかに人生はある。
日本とは違う宗教観や価値観の中で彼はなにを見てきたのだろう。スピーチを通して彼の見てきた風景や思考の一端を一瞬垣間見た気持ちになりました。
④ SSさん ｢Challenge and take actionーチャレンジ！行動を起こしてなんぼ」
™.SS is our new member and he delivered his “ice breaker speech”, his first one to introduce himself.
He was born in Osaka. His dream was to see the world!! As an engineer, he has dedicated himself to producing various products, especially audio devices, which has been known internationally.
It seems he has had good luck, wonderful opportunities in his career. He visited 48 countries as a business person. But it was himself who knocked on the doors and kept developing and gained those chances.
“Challenge and take action.” His words sounded convincing because he had ever done it.
大阪生まれのなにわ男子。夢は「でっかい世界を見ること」だった。
SSさんは理系エンジニアとして、音響機器メーカーのS社や別のS社などを渡り歩いてきました。就職/転職のチャンスも、関心のある仕事も与えられてきたのではなく、掴みにいった。新聞で見つけた求人、電話をかけ面接の機会をもらい、自分を売り込み、やりたいことを全力アピール。ウォー〇マンの開発、技術改善などに貢献。
仕事の幅を拡げながら訪れた国は４８カ国。経験と知見と度胸。世界を飛び回り生きてきた半生は、夢を有言実行してきたと言える。大事にしたいことは「挑戦心」。
その力ある声と言葉を聞いているだけで、やる前に諦めている場合ではないとガッツをもらえるスピーカーの誕生です。
<Speech Evaluation Session/ 論評スピーチ>
Evaluators deliver their speeches to encourage the prepared speakers by appreciating their efforts and good points. They also give them suggestions to improve their speeches and delivery styles.
総合論評者のリードのもと、各論評者は担当のスピーチのどこが素晴らしかったか、どんな工夫や表現に魅力を感じたか、いい点や各スピーカーの強みを捉えて伝えました。
次に、どのような点に留意し、デリバリーするとよりよいスピーチになるか、改善点を提案しました。
＜General Evaluation/ 総合論評＞
General Evaluator ™.TM gave us warm and constructive feedback.
He evaluated all evaluators, roletakers and the meeting in general.
We admire his beautiful and fluent English. He creates a good and solemn atmosphere.
クラブ創設メンバーの一人であるベテランメンバーＴＭさんによる、包括的な総合論評。
丁寧に一語一語明瞭に響く、美しい英語の発音と重みと威厳のある話し方。空気がひきしまるように感じます。

役割の説明をみんなの前で話し、任務を正確に確実に遂行してミーティングを支えてくれました。映画上映の録画禁止マン、重厚なマスクは暑すぎて任務中は人間に戻っていました。

Hi, I’m Yukiko.
I was a high school student when I enjoyed Halloween for the first time.
“Trick or Treat!!” I gave small bags of sweets to my friends.
I love cooking. It’s like crafting with food!! I made a jack o'lantern with salmon, beans and rice. I put some ghosts made from toasted bread on salad♪ (Photo above☆彡)
I enjoyed our Halloween meeting. Very special and we felt happy together as we did last year. Feeling blessed to have such a wonderful time with friends. How happy I am/ we are…
At the same time, there are heartbreaking wars on earth. People in the battle fields can’t take it for granted that they can live and celebrate the seasonal events with family and friends now and the following year. I think of them, having tasty sweets in my hands.
Trick or Treat. Trick or Peace.
I can’t help hoping that our power of words and love connect to the world for peacemaking.
ハロウィンという言葉を初めて知ったのは高校生のときだっただろうか。
まだ日本ではほとんど認知されておらず話題にものぼらなかった頃。
友達には「？」という顔をされながらも “Happy Halloween!! といってお菓子を配って嬉しかった記憶。
働き始めて料理をするようになってから、「食べられる工作」としての料理が好き。
今回のハロウィンは、スモークサーモンと枝豆わかめごはんで作ったジャコランタン（かぼちゃのおばけ提灯）と、食パンで作ったおばけのクルトンをトッピングした焼肉サラダ。
これも秋の味覚の一種！？（＝“Taste of Autumn”- ミーティングテーマ）
めぐる季節。繰り返される四季。去年楽しかったハロウィン例会。今年もみんなでできてとても嬉しかった。そして、それはあたりまえではないことを想うのです。生きているからシーズンイベントを共に祝うことができるのだと。
世界各地で広がっている戦争の惨禍。今日・明日の命があるかわからない人々がいる。見聞きするニュースに心が痛む。平和を享受し、衣食住足り、不安のない日を送れることがどれほど『有難い』のか。手の中のお菓子ひとつに、目の前の幸せの重みを感じる。
言葉と思考と小さな思いやりが武力ではなく平和と笑顔に繋がりますように。
私たちが紡ぐ言葉と笑顔の連鎖は、ささやかでも尊い。
